Abstract

The human fertilization rate in vitro is directly affected by severe asthenozoospermia and the prognosiis of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer(IVF-ET) techniques in asthenoszoospermia is poor.
Improvement of sperm motility has been observed in oligozoospermic/asthenozoospermic males with the use of the sperm stimulant pentoxifylline. In our study, 28 of 43 asthenozoospermic men (65.1%0 improved their sperm motility by 1.8% to 42.3%
(mean
22.8%) and 12 of 27 normal men (44.4%) improved motility by 0.8% to 23.1% (mean 11.2%). In asthenozoospermic samples, the average motility of the group treated with pentoxifylline, 49.4¡¾29.0%(P<0.01), but no difference was noted in
norinozoospermic
samples. There was a negative correlation between the change of motility after treatment with pentoxifylline and motility after treatment in a Percoll gradient(r=0.395, p=0.015).
